Fierce, cool and watchful, these are poised individuals scrutinizing their own creative roles,
composing themselves with discretion and gravity before the camera. There is grandeur too and a
sense of figures appearing from some other age: Richard Hamilton like King Arthur and John Piper like Merlin.
But these portraits are also about modesty, something which is rarely pictured. It is the modesty of
eminent individuals, so often thought of as unapproachable, who in these photographs transmit to us
both their humanity and their scepticism.
